DTI Urban Rifle Course – Skill Triumphs Gear

DTI Urban Rifle Course, on the run during a transition drill

At the DTI Urban Rifle Course in Rochester, Indiana, we find an array of experience levels and gear levels. In the day and age when students often strive to have the latest and greatest accessories for their top-of-the-line rifle, the first student to qualify at the end of the second day used a standard, iron-sighted AK-47! Skill always trumps gear. A few of the lessons learned: where to carry extra magazines; making sure your gear doesn’t fall everywhere when you move; night/low light shooting.
The class brought everyone to a similar skill level, and for some, the leap was bigger than others, but you can’t argue with results.

IDPA Match in Plainfield IL (2010June06)

IDPA Match_Steve Camp20100606 (to see video, click on this link)

I attended an IDPA match at Oak Park Sportsman’s Club in Plainfield IL on 6/06/10. I shoot these monthly matches to help me maintain (and hopefully improve) my gunhandling competency and increase my survival index.
I shoot these matches a “tactically” as I can. I may not “win the match”, but I am usually within the top 20% or so.
I practice my use of cover, 360 degree scans and I go for accuracy more than speed. I usually am one of the top “fewest points down” participants.

Doublestar 1911 pistol review (May 2010)

Cincopa video hosting solution for your website. Another great product from Cincopa Send Files.

Here’s a short ARR on the Doublestar 1911 that I just got.
Doublestar 1911, .45 ACP with 5” barrel with a rail frame.
Novak sights with white dots (no tritium inserts), looks like Ed Brown thumb safety & grip safety, 25 LPI front strap checkering, steel flat checkered mainspring housing, front slide serrations, original JMB design firing pin system (no FP block) and I was told no MIM internals.
I picked up the Doublestar the same day that I was leaving with my son to attend four days of training with Henk Iverson (www.StrikeTactical.com). Handgun levels I and II.
The only pre-course prep that was done was to field strip the Doublestar, run a bore brush & some patches through the bore and then lube the pistol.
My son used the Doublestar throughout Henk’s course and fired just fewer than 1,200 rounds of assorted ammunition, consisting mainly of reloaded 230 grain plated RN bullets @ 840 fps.
Approximately 150 rounds of various factory hollow points were also fired through the pistol. Zero malfunctions, hesitations or hiccups were encountered during the feeding, firing, extracting and ejecting the ammunition fired. 100% performance!
Magazines used were a combination of standard 7 round Wilson Combat, their 8 round Elite magazines along with some McCormick 8 round PowerMags.
The only issue that was encountered was the rear section of the thumb safety overhung the rear of the frame approx .040”. Less than 60 seconds with a dremel motor tool with a rubber abrasive wheel took care of that.
The only thing that I’ll change is to replace the Novak rear sight with a 10-8 black sight.
I will purchase another Doublestar (without the frame rail) when they become available in June or July (hopefully).
Great pistol . . . . highly recommended!

Just Completed DTI Scenario Based Force-on-Force May 22-23 Course

Cincopa video hosting solution for your website. Another great product from Cincopa Send Files.

DTI and Safe Direction have just completed their third SBT-FOF training program this past weekend, May 22 & 23.

Much learning was accomplished through the live interaction between students and our experienced role players. John and Vicki Farnam provided post scenario feedback upon the completion of each exercise. The students were also encouraged to give their feedback after each scenario was completed.

Students were also given the opportunity to choose several scenarios to “do-over”, thereby allowing them multiple opportunities to complete similar scenarios.

Our full complement of experienced Role players tested everyone. The student’s frustrations and excitement were thrown in at no extra charge!

Our SBT-FOF courses are more geared towards using your “software”, not your “hardware” skills. Most of the scenarios do not have to evolve into shooting incidents if your observation, verbalization and posturing skills are honed. This course will test all of those skills thoroughly.

Gearing up for this weekend’s DTI Scenario Based Force-on-Force Course

Photo detail of Strike Tactical whiteboard talking points

Strike Tactical Course "whiteboard"

Just completed Strike Tactical Level 1 and 2 Handgun Class and I return a wiser man. Henk Iverson’s athletic, no-nonsense style and his hands-on methods are quite convincing. Several of his techniques and tactics were different that ones that I’ve practiced for many years, but by keeping an open mind and trying out his methods over four days, was enough to convince me to practice further with an eye toward changing up my personal training. It’s always good to entertain a different point of view and in Henk’s case, it’s a point of view based on real life experience. He teachings reflect his website motto: Failure is not an option.

Strike Tactical Course – Another View

Cincopa video hosting solution for your website. Another great product from Cincopa Send Files.

Notes on Day One:

Iverson teaches stuff that is similar to other defensive firearms courses I’ve attended, but he kicks it up a notch. Initially, his teaching style seems very confrontational and his standards are very high. He works you hard.

That being said, Iverson is a very good teacher, a hard teacher, but a very good one. It’s good to learn stuff from firearms instructors with different perspectives; all it can do is help. He is a stickler, and he stuck to me. Biggest complements I received from him were “You don’t suck that much” and “You are a good shooter, I can make you a great one”

At the end of Day One, I found he completely fixed my grip and I was shooting a lot better.

He knows his stuff, and he uses it. Looking forward to the rest of the week(end)
